Professional Experience
1961 to 1963 - US Navy - Electrical schools and other schools related to communication technologies - Electronics communication technician.
1963 to 1972 - Electrician, journeyman electrician and Forman electrician, mostly on medium and large commercial jobs and high-end custom homes in the Washington, DC metro area and the Houston, Texas metro area.
1972 to 1980 - A great deal of traveling and living in monastic and intentional communities, with work mostly involved in directing construction and alternative building projects in several of the communities. There was a lot of studying and experimenting with alternative building concepts, design, structural and finish carpentry, and active and passive solar systems and design concepts during this time.
1980 to 2000 - Self employed licensed general contractor in Santa Cruz, California, and the surrounding Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay areas. Traditional and alternative construction projects, design, remodeling, additions, and new construction, including sophisticated house lighting systems, and control, sound and digital systems, and active and passive solar design, solar hot water and solar electrical systems. Instrumental in the design and construction of the first permitted load-bearing straw bale structure in Santa Cruz County.
2000 to present - Systems and project designs and drawings, and advising clients on alternative construction techniques, water conservation, passive design possibilities, mediation, and solar electrical and alternative power and hot water systems design, drawings and advice in the Silver City and Southwest New Mexico area. Also advising clients on how to find and interact with contractors.
Also at different times member of the board of local environmental organizations and the paid coordinator of a local effort bringing together ranchers, environmentalists and agency people to talk about shared and competing concerns. Presently on the board of a non-profit that is actively engaged in bringing true non-profit Community Radio to Silver City, Grant County and SW New Mexico. Other extensive community involvements and activities. The creator and until recently the administrator/moderator of a local, progressive, sustainable community email network of approximately 1900 members that has been in existence since 2001. Also until recently the creator and administrator of the Gila Community Forum and Calendar.
